Urban Sketching at the zoo.
Colorado meets San Diego. I had such a fun morning meeting Paul Heaston and his family at the zoo this morning. Being able to meet people who we know from the urban sketcher community is just one of the things I like about being an urban sketcher.

Turtles at the San Diego Zoo
I went to see the baby panda at the San Diego Zoo but all I could see was a little white fur ball in a stump. He was sleeping.

San Diego Zoo
I spent about 5 hours at the zoo today sketching with Susan and Joan. Susan wanted to go by the tortoises because they keep pretty still but they were quite active and in some interesting positions.

It's good that we don't mind drawing in front of people. When the tortoises started mating about 1 foot in front of us, we were surrounded by tons of people. You can barely see Susan in her chair.

When my sister was here from Tennessee kept making me laugh by telling me about the tortoises at her zoo that were mating. She said the male was making faces and waving his arms up in the air. Well I watched our tortoises here in San Diego for a while and they NEVER did that. I'm going to have a talk with her. . . Hello?

Zoo Class #2
Today was the last day of the zoo class.
Yesterday I spoke to a fellow artist about his cartooning and he shared his sketchbook with me. He had some wonderful caricatures of his friends. I was really surprised and excited today when he gave me a book he learned and practiced from!

Annette suggested that we draw our animal from a distance, then close, then a detail. I attempted to follow direction but my details weren't so detailed and my distance was pretty close.

Class at the zoo
Susan invited me to attend her zoo class today. The instructor, Annette Paquet was awesome and the class was absolutely FREE with the city of San Diego! I expect to take more classes from Annette, such as figure and plain air landscape painting.
