Sketchbook Flip August 2019 thru October 2019

 

This is a sketchbook that was made for me by my friend Alicia Hallett. The sketchbook is made with watercolor paper and is 10 x 11 inches. 1:42 minutes.

Navel Orange Tree - Pen and Ink with Watercolor

It's been in the high 80s in San Diego lately. Yesterday when I felt a breeze and comfortable outside I decided it was time to sketch in the yard again.

I chose our navel orange tree. We have had it for years and it always produces oranges but I only remember one year that they were sweet and tasty. I did this sketch in pen and ink with watercolor.

Kitchen Patio

With a temperature of mid to high 70s in San Diego, I have been going outside to draw. This is one of my shelves in the kitchen patio. The cow planter used to have legs but they rotted off. Koh-i-nor Sketch Pen and Watercolor.

Zoom Portrait Party

This week my friend told me about a Zoom Portrait Party organized by the San Francisco Urban Sketchers. I only had an hour before another zoom meeting started so I only got to draw 2 people. The leader asked participants to pose and each pose was for 7 minutes. There were introductions before we started sketching and we found out one of the participants was from England. It was a fun experience but it made me tired for my next 2 hour zoom meeting. 

This sketchbook was handmade by me. Most of the book contains mixed media or watercolor paper but the first part of the book has very thin stationary paper. The watercolor just soaked right in.

Balboa Island, Newport Beach

I worked in a small purse-sized sketchbook so I could create a quick memory of our visit to Newport Beach. When I sketch during visits with friends I tend to focus on my sketch rather than conversation so I try to keep sketches small and short term.  There were many historical homes dating back to 1935 and 1936 on Balboa Island and this particular house was across the street from our friends. The car drove up during my sketch process and as soon as I started to add it, the car moved out of the view. 

San Clemente Life Guard Station Jeep

I had some time before my friends arrived for a visit to San Clemente so I sat on a bench facing the lifeguard station and jeep.

This sketch was completed fast and small because I didn't know when they would arrive. Always a pleasure to relax and let time slip away with a sketch.

Oceanside Harbor

Sketching with the San Diego Urban Sketchers at Oceanside Harbor. My eyesight is still bad, that's probably why I painted in large shapes. Details don't show up very good. I painted this with watercolor then added lines with a Rapido Sketch Pen.

Urban Sketching at Farmers Market at Old Poway Park

I went to Old Poway Park with the intent of sketching. Having music while I was Urban Sketching was a treat. I drew the musician with the saxophone first and was going to stop after drawing him but then I decided to fill my page. If I had done more planning I would have put them in their correct positions and scale. I use Winsor and Newton Watercolors with a Paper Mate Flair Pen. I did the drawing first, then filled with paint.

Los Rios Street with Urban Sketchers

This sketch was created on Los Rios Street this weekend while attending an event with Los Angeles Urban Sketchers, San Diego Urban Sketchers, San Clemente Urban Sketchers and Long Beach Sketch Meet Up. I normally sketch for 2 hours but this event was 4 hours which included coffee, visiting, taking photos and sketching. This extra time allowed me to tackle a full spread in this handmade sketchbook.

Urban Sketching in Old Town San Diego

The San Diego Urban Sketchers met on the corner of Twiggs Avenue and San Diego Avenue in Old Town to sketch and welcome 2 out of town sketchers. We had Urban Sketchers from France and New York join us for the morning. Making friends around the world is one of the benefits of urban sketching.

Day 1 of #OneWeek100People2018

I have taken on the challenge put out by Mark Taro Holmes and Liz Steel to draw 100 people in one week. #OneWeek100People2018. Today I worked in gouache and pencil, marker and ink pen.I worked small and used photo references because I had to stay indoors. Tomorrow I plan to draw people while urban sketching.

Watercolor with Urban Sketchers at Mission Trails Visitor Center

These sketches were created at the Mission Trails Visitor Center in San Diego while at an event with the San Diego Urban Sketchers.  I used my favorite drawing tools which are the koh-i-noor rapidosketch  pen and a set of Holbein watercolors. The Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses 7,220 acres of both natural and developed recreational land with 60 miles of hiking trails.

Cabrillo Bridge Balboa Park, San Diego

The San Diego Watercolor Society meets every Wednesday at different locations in San Diego. Today we met at the Cabrillo Bridge which leads right in to Balboa Park. The entrance is at the corner of El Prado and Balboa Drive.

 

Leo Carrillo Ranch, Carlsbad

This is my sketch done with the San Diego Urban Sketchers at Leo Carrillo Historical Park.
I used a Koh-i-nor sketch pen and watercolor.

Hotel Del Coronado Corner of RH Dana and Orange Avenue, Coronado

San Diego History Center

This is the building that houses the San Diego History Museum, the Railroad Museum and Photography Museum. I met with 3 sketch buddies today to sketch in this area of Balboa Park. I started on a 4 x 6 inch Arches watercolor board with pen and ink then painted it with watercolor.

This huge book in the history museum is the Guest Register from the 1915 Exposition. A beautiful book that was almost destroyed for scrap paper.
