The Persian Water Rug Fountain

I met with "the Rachel Group" in Balboa Park today to sketch in a little area where the Persian Water Rug Fountain is located. The fountain wasn't running but there was a great view and a lot of art talk.

Balboa Park

I got to visit the San Diego Museum of Art after entering a few pieces in the San Diego Art Institute, Museum of the Living Artist . They have a new sketchbook exhibit called Alternative Accounts: Plains Indian Ledger Art from the Nineteenth Century to Now. A bonus was getting to see my friend Stephen the Magician (aka Sleeveless the Magician) after his performance. Sketches done in pencil with watercolor.

20 minute pose

Stephen Sloan gave me one of his zines on stamp carving. The booklet is hand-stitched.

This is a "how to" of carving and also features a gallery of his carved portraits. He has been featured in rubber stamp maddness, eraser carvers quarterly and moonlight chronicles.

He taught the "reconstructed journal" class I took in september.

The Reconstructed Journal

Whenever I go sketching with Stephen and Rachel, Stephen brings sketchbooks he MAKES HIMSELF! I finally got to go to a class of his held at Studio Maureen and the Next Door Gallery. The class was called the "Reconstructed Journal". 6 of us attended and the journals we got to bring home were simply beautiful.

If you have never been to Studio Maureen, I highly recommend a visit. The studio includes a shop filled with wonderful handmade items, such as, ceramic art, jewelry, paper goods, glassware, clothing and irresistible garden art and folk art from Mexico.
