Festival of the Sail 2013

Festival of Sail is the LARGEST Tall Ship festival on the west coast and is hosted at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Me and Dominique Eiche visited the harbor to sketch the event.

The Pilgrim was built in 1945; Denmark. Her home port is Dana Point, CA. The Pilgrim is a full sized replica of the 1825 hide brig immortalized by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. in his American seafaring classic novel, Two Years Before the Mast.

Surprise built 1970; Nova Scotia. Home port: San Diego, CA The ship now known as HMS Surprise began life in 1970 as a replica of the 18th century Royal Navy frigate Rose. During the next 30 years Rose sailed thousands of miles as an attraction vessel and sail training ship prior to her conversion to HMS Surprise for the academy award winning film, *Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
