Painting at Double Peak Park in San Marcos

I got to paint with a new group at Double Peak Park. It was very cold and I kept wanting to quit but I kept at it.

Felicita Park, Escondido

These are from a paint out at Felicita Park in Escondido. We all wore masks and stayed 6 feet apart. There were a few families passing by us on the trail because we painted close to the bridge by the little stream. It's a nice place to walk with plenty of shade.

My watercolor of the path ahead.

Plein Air at Kit Carson Park

I was able to paint with the Inland Painters at Kit Carso Park. We stayed apart from each other and we all had our masks with us. We took them off when we painted. Only 2 different people stopped to talk to me but they put on their masks when they stopped and they stayed 6 feet away. There is always someone that stops to talk to me and look at what I am painting so I have been hesitant to paint in public.

I painted in my sketchbook using watercolor because I didn't want to pack a lot of gear.

Before sketching I took a walk on the Kit Carson Trail Loop. It took me about 40 minutes. I had never been on the trail before so I didn't know what to expect. It was a nice clean trail with some shade.

30x30 Direct Watercolor - #18 and 19 - Lake Wohlford

My second gathering with Inland Painters took place at Lake Wohlford, Escondido, California. We arrived at 9:30 a.m. when it was windy and cold. At noon the sun came out and warmed us up but most of us were packing it up at that time. I am glad the painters choose locations with limited amounts of people. The only people there were us painters and a few families fishing by the shore.

Direct Watercolor - Dixon Lake, Escondido CA

Finally an outing with Inland Painters and the courage to get out in public to paint with my friends. It was so hot that it seemed the only people enjoying the lake were the fishermen and fishing families. We went early and stayed in the shade. It was wonderful being outdoors enjoying the lake again.

Poway Lake en plein air

We found some shade at Lake Poway and stayed long enough to get some plein air painting done. This is a small sketchpainting created with casein.

Practicing Plein Air in Casein

I like casein because it is so creamy and goes on the paper easily. It looks just like gouache when on paper but I like the feel to casein better. I also like the smell.

Last night I prepared an orange rectangle on my sketchbook page because I wanted to see how opaque the paint was and how it would look on an orange background. I am still working at getting a pure clean color so I don't think the orange background was a good idea. The colors look a bit muted. This might be due to the medium or just my way of applying the color.

I will probably keep working in Casein for a little while.

At Lake Hodges with my Gouache Palette

I decided to work in gouache when I went painting with the Inland Painters at Lake Hodges this morning. It rained today and has been raining at least once a week for a month or so, which has made everything very green. I only have one green in my palette so I get to try mixing with black, yellow and blues for a variety of greens. I'm glad I worked small (4x6) because it got pretty cold and I was ready to pack it up after a few hours.

Urban Sketching in Old Town San Diego

The San Diego Urban Sketchers met on the corner of Twiggs Avenue and San Diego Avenue in Old Town to sketch and welcome 2 out of town sketchers. We had Urban Sketchers from France and New York join us for the morning. Making friends around the world is one of the benefits of urban sketching.
