The Art of Manliness has a fascinating article on how famous men used "pocket notebooks". The article: The Pocket Notebooks of 20 Famous Men" includes the notebooks of Mark Twain, George Patton, Thomas Jefferson and George Lucas.
It made me feel a little less loony for carrying mine around and documenting just about everything...
